Coaching Plan

In 1995 the Committee of the Canberra Croquet Club decided to adopt a coaching plan to facilitate better coaching of potential new players. This plan was revised in 2007. It outlines general coaching policy of beginners and existing members, as well as defining modules that are available. A copy of the plan is available in PDF format.

Introductory Lessons

The Canberra Croquet Club conducts introductory coaching lessons when appropriate numbers of people are interested. The format is six 2-hour lessons, with one coach to 2-4 students. Before signing up for lessons all interested people are required to come along to a Come & Try afternoon to learn a little about the sport.
Details on the Come & Try sessions are available in PDF or Word format.
For details on coaching lessons print out and return the application form (Word or PDF format) or contact the club by phone on (02) 6273 1030.

Each lesson is comprised of one, or more, modules. Each module has defined learning goals, and practice exercises. At the end of each lesson modules are given out for the following lesson in order for students to have time to study what they will learn. Modules that are passed out have basic information, but are not meant to form a book on how to play Croquet - there are plenty already available and much better than we could write.

Advanced Modules

Members of the Club have access to advanced modules. These take the same form as the Introductory Modules and are offered from time to time.
  1. The Cannon
  2. Using Bisques
  3. Openings
  4. Basic Break Making
  5. Lifts & Leaves
  6. Split Shots (PDF)
  7. Effective Practice (PDF)
  8. Basic Laws Course (not available online). This is usually held over two afternoons and a charge is made by the presenter.
  9. Peeling (not available online). This is held maybe once a year and specifically targets players who are capable of completing triple peels.

Other Coaching Resources

There are a number of other coaching resources on the Web

  1. John Riches Books. These are produced by one of Australia's top coaches and are progressively becoming freely available online. They are available either in HTML or PDF format from the Oxford Croquet website.
  2. The Oxford Croquet site has information for the complete beginner, the beginner (including handicap play), intermediate level (breaks, openings, leaves, bisques, and much more), and advanced leel play (peeling, supershot opening, etc). All players are strongly advised to use this site often.
