Canberra had the pleasure to host its Easter Carnival during a
period of one of Canberra's best kept secrets - its delightful
autumn weather. The Club's investment in lawn renovations late
last year yielded good quality playing surfaces for the tournament.
The Club's lawns are located close to the precincts of the Parliamentary
Triangle as well as being in the vicinity of Lennox Gardens which
are on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. Its siting is on the
path of many locals and visitors who stroll between various venues.
Many passers-by took the opportunity to rest in the shade of trees
surrounding the lawns and watch games in progress, some lingered
for quite some time and conversed with players. One particularly
interesting party was a French couple cycling on a tandem bicycle
and towing a trishaw-type conveyance containing their two and
a half year old son. They have been touring for some three years
and have completed travel through most of Europe, South America
and Asia. After a short stop and photo session they continued
their journeys with waves and our best wishes.
A pleasant distraction at the Club are the birds who visited the
area during the Carnival. Fleeting visits from finches, fan tail
and colourful grass parrots attracted one's attention. Raucous
calls by sulphur crested cockatoos in the mid to late afternoon
high in the trees makes them hard to ignore. Resident magpies
and pee-wees are pretty much a constant presence. One adventurous
pee-wee 'surfs' on the roofs of turning cars. His/her technique
is to alight on a vehicle's roof as it slowly makes a left hand
turn then fly off as the vehicle picks up speed. It then moves
onto another vehicle in a line of stationary traffic and rides
it for a short time. So far it has resisted the temptation to
'ride' balls in play on the lawns.
